About the MERLOT collection

The MERLOT Repository is not only learning materials. Along with the learning materials, members have contributed assignments and comments to enhance the teaching experience of an exercise. The learning materials are categorized into 11 different material types. A large selection of materials in MERLOT also have assignments and comments attached to them. It is also possible to add any material to a personal collection, to make organizing your teaching materials for each of your courses. Snapshots have also been created for some materials to provide more depth to a material, by the author of the material.

You can also find the answers to some frequently asked questions about the collection, such as:

  • How do materials get into MERLOT?
  • Where are all the materials stored?
  • Can I use materials from MERLOT in my course?
  • Are MERLOT materials copyrighted?

Peer Review Process

The Peer Review process has many components to it. All reviews are completed by Editorial Board members from 15 different discipline communities. Each editorial board goes through a selection process and a rating system. Evaluation criteria are used to determine the overall rating for a learning material in MERLOT. If being a peer reviewer is something you are interested in, you can volunteer for a board.

Creative Commons and MERLOT Intellectual Property

MERLOT recognizes the effort and commitment of the many different kinds of MERLOT community members who participate in building and sustaining the repository and services that comprise MERLOT.  To protect the membership and its contributions to the community, MERLOT has adopted the intellectual property (IP) protection policies of the consortium, Creative Commons (http://creativecommons.org)  to 1) encourage creators of online materials to share their work with others who might wish to reuse the materials in creative ways, and 2) ensure that contributions of online materials by MERLOT members to the MERLOT community are protected from misuse and abuse.
